Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has risked serious ridicule by appearing to compare Francis Coquelin with Chelsea midfield powerhouse N’Golo Kante.
The Gunners boss was asked about the performances of his summer signing Granit Xhaka, who has been a disappointment at the Emirates Stadium since joining at the start of the season.
Wenger opted to sign the Switzerland international despite Kante moving from Leicester City to Chelsea at around the same period, but the Frenchman doesn’t feel the two players should be compared.
His attempt to steer the conversation away from uncomfortable territory backfired, however, as he inadvertently suggested Kante should be compared with Coquelin instead.
‘Xhaka is more about distribution of the pass and Kante is more the ball winner, with the real technique to steal the ball without making the foul,’ Wenger said.
‘You should compare Kante more with Coquelin than with Xhaka. Xhaka is more a distribution player.’
Given Coquelin’s performances this season, there are surely few football fans on the planet who’d put the Arsenal ace in anywhere near the same bracket as Kante, who is being tipped as a strong contender for PFA Player of the Year.
